I Tested 15 Shaping Leggings—These Are the 5 Best of 2026

I wore shaping leggings from 15 manufacturers for three months and picked the 5 best for you—judging everything from hold and fit to fabric quality and whether each pair is worth the price.

Our top pick: Curavel FormLeggings, worn day to day
Tested in everyday life. All five pairs were worn day to day for 90 days and washed 20 times. This article is an advertisement; see the disclosure at the end of the page.

Some women swear by their shaping leggings and wear them every day. Others have already tried three different brands and been let down. For a long time, I was in the second group, because the differences between manufacturers are enormous—from fabric quality and real hold to whether each pair is worth the price.

Look a little closer, and you’ll quickly notice: not every pair sold as shaping leggings deserves the name. Some really hold and smooth; others are barely more than thin workout leggings with a fancy label.

That’s why, for Women’s Wellness, I put 15 pairs of shaping leggings from different manufacturers through the same three months. I’ll tell you which ones are worth the money – and which ones aren’t.

The most surprising part: The quality differences are even bigger than I expected. And they often come down to things you can’t see in the product photos. You’ll find the results further down.

Why shaping leggings at all?

A waistband that rolls down, fabric that goes see-through when you bend, thighs that look uneven under thin leggings, and a pair that loses its shape after a few washes. If you’ve had one or more of these, you’re not alone. Most of us have a drawer full of leggings we never wear.

Good shaping leggings solve this with three things: a high waist that stays put, a firm, even knit that smooths the thighs and butt instead of clinging to every contour, and fabric that is thick enough to stay opaque and keep its shape. That sounds simple. In my test, only one pair got all three right.

What most leggings get wrong.

Cheap “shaping” leggings print a pattern on thin fabric and call it technology. Classic shapewear holds the belly and butt but stops at the thigh—and costs as much as a pair of jeans. Gym leggings are built for an hour of sweat, not for a full day at the office. And compression-style leggings are often so tight that you take them off by lunchtime.

The problem isn’t a lack of choice. The problem is that most leggings either don’t hold or don’t fit into everyday life.

What good shaping leggings do differently.

The best pairs in my test share one thing: a seamless, high-stretch knit that is firmer where you want hold—waist, belly, thighs, butt—and softer where you need freedom to move. The result is a smooth, even line under a dress, a tunic or a long sweater, and leggings you forget you’re wearing.

Add a high-rise waistband that doesn’t roll, fully opaque fabric, and a knit that comes back into shape after every wash, and you have leggings you’ll reach for every day. Put them on in the morning, and they look the same at six in the evening.

But beware: Not all shaping leggings are the same.

The term shaping leggings is not protected. Any manufacturer can use it, whether the leggings hold anything or not. That’s exactly what makes the market so confusing. So I tested and compared the best-known brands.

How I tested.

To give you an honest, well-researched recommendation, I wore 15 pairs of shaping leggings from different manufacturers in everyday life. Over 90 days, I rated every product on several criteria—from hold and fit to fabric quality and how well each pair kept its shape after repeated washing.

My goal: to give you all the information so you can decide for yourself which leggings are right for you. No bad buys, no money down the drain.

Curavel FormLeggings: seamless knit with firmer zones at the waist and thighs

Curavel FormLeggings

Score9.4
Curavel FormLeggings

Firm hold meets everyday comfort. Curavel combines a seamless high-stretch knit with firmer zones exactly where you want them: belly, thighs and butt. The moment you put them on, you feel it: a smooth, even line from the high waist down to the ankle, without pinching anywhere. The waistband sits high and stays there—when you sit, bend, or climb stairs. In my 90-day test, these were the only leggings I didn’t have to pull up once during the day.

What convinced me most: They don’t look like shapewear—they look like clean, modern leggings. Five colors, sizes S–2XL, high waist, fully opaque fabric – and you can wear them all day, at the office, on a walk or just at home. After 20 washes, they still fit exactly as they did on day one. Comfortable, wearable every day and still smoothing.

Pros
  • 3D knit and very firm hold on day one
  • Sizes all the way up to 5XL, 10 colors
  • 90-day returns, free size exchange
Cons
  • The crotch seam gave way on my first pair
  • 90% polyamide, 10% spandex – the fabric loses its snap after a few washes, and the hold with it
  • Very hard to get on, too tight for a full day
  • Waistband digs in when you sit
Best for

Anyone who wants really tight leggings for an hour at the gym and takes them off right after. They’re not made for a full day.

Very tight – but the seams and the fabric don’t keep up. On paper, Cellumove has it all: 3D knit, ads full of promises, and sizes up to 5XL. And on day one you feel it: The hold is intense—almost too intense. Getting them on is real work—you have to pull them up inch by inch.

And that’s exactly where they give way – literally. My first pair split in the crotch the fourth time I wore it. The second pair held up, but after ten washes it had clearly lost its snap—and as the fabric relaxed, so did the hold. The label explains why: 90 percent polyamide, 10 percent spandex. Too tight for a full day on day one, too loose after a month. For an hour at the gym they do the job. For everyday wear, they didn’t.

Spanx SPANXshape Booty Boost 7/8

USA · $98 · returns accepted

Hold & smoothing6.5 · Fair

Fabric & durability9 · Excellent
Comfort & everyday wear8 · Good
Value4 · Weak
Pros
  • The best-known shapewear brand in America – sold at Nordstrom, Macy’s and Dillard’s
  • The fabric holds its shape after 20 washes and stays fully opaque and squat-proof
  • Sizes XS–3X, 7 colors
  • Lifts the butt and holds the belly in from the first wear
Cons
  • Holds at the waist and butt – but stops at the thigh, where most of us want the smoothing
  • Thick, warm fabric – fine in winter, a lot in summer
  • $98 for one pair – almost twice the price of the winner
  • Runs small – I needed a size up
Best for

Anyone who wants a lifted butt and a flat belly under a dress and has a Spanx budget. For the thighs, they do little—the shaping stops where the leg starts.

Read the full test report

The big name—it holds at the top, not at the thigh. Spanx invented shapewear, and you feel it the moment you put the Booty Boost on: Everything is lifted, everything is held in, the butt looks like it’s had a workout. The fabric is thick, opaque and survived all 20 washes without a single loose thread. This was the best-made pair in the whole test. At $98, it had better be.

But the shaping is concentrated at the waist, hips, and butt—exactly where it flatters—and stops at the thighs. Below that, the Booty Boost is an ordinary, rather warm legging. Spanx doesn’t claim anything else: the product page talks about “lift” and “360-shaping” of the butt, not about the thigh. If that’s what you want, it’s excellent. If you want a smooth line from waist to knee, it isn’t.

Pros
  • Woven pattern across the thighs and butt
  • Sizes S–5XL
  • Cheapest pair in the test
Cons
  • Hardly any hold – the leggings go on easily, and that’s the problem
  • Manufacturer recommends wearing them for only 2 hours a day
  • Thin fabric – after 20 washes the waistband is loose and the pattern is fading
  • Slightly see-through when you bend
Best for

Anyone who wants leggings with a textured pattern for under $30 and doesn’t expect any hold.

Looks similar—feels very different. Leonie & Co uses the same language as the better brands: 3D pattern, shaping, buy-one-get-one bundles. And for $29.90 the first impression is decent: The pattern is woven in, not printed, and the leggings go on easily. Too easily, as it turns out.

Because there’s hardly any hold in them. The fabric is thin, the waistband started to loosen by wash 15, and after 90 days the pattern on the thigh had visibly faded. The manufacturer itself recommends wearing them for just two hours a day—which tells you how much everyday wear they’re built for. As a light, patterned legging for the price, fine. As shaping leggings, no.

Pros
  • Woven pattern, 6 colors
  • Sizes XS–4XL
Cons
  • Medium hold – and tighter at the waist than at the leg, which is the wrong way round
  • Pattern fades after 20 washes
  • Sizing by weight – mine ran small
  • Waistband rolls when you sit
Best for

Anyone who mostly wants a patterned legging with medium hold for the gym. Not for a full day at the office.

Big ads, average leggings. Ionix Labs runs more ads than any other brand in this test, and every one of them promises a transformation. The leggings themselves are unremarkable: 90 percent polyamide, 10 percent spandex, a woven pattern and medium hold that is slightly stronger at the waist than at the leg— which is the wrong way round for a smooth line.

After 20 washes the pattern was fading, and the waistband had started to roll when I sat down. Nothing about them is bad; nothing about them is special either. For $49.90 you can get more hold, more comfort and a waistband that stays where it is.

In short

After 90 days and five pairs, the picture is clear: Four out of five fail on at least one of the things that matter: even hold, a waistband that stays put, durability, and all-day comfort. The manufacturers write “shaping” on the label and deliver leggings that split at the seam, shapewear that stops at the thigh, thin fabric with a pattern, or a waistband that rolls by lunchtime.

And the worst part: Weak shaping leggings are not “half as good”. They are money down the drain. You wear them for three weeks, keep pulling them up, put them in the closet and decide that shaping leggings “don’t work for you”. The problem was never you. The problem was the leggings.

My verdict after 90 days

Curavel FormLeggings win with a score of 9.4/10 – for four reasons:

Cellumove holds, but only until the seam gives way. Spanx lifts, but stops at the thigh – and costs almost twice as much. Leonie & Co looks similar, but has hardly any hold. Ionix Labs promises the most and delivers the average. Curavel is the only pair that got everything right. I now own them in three colors. If you only order one pair, get them in black—and wear them every day.

“I spent years buying leggings I pulled up all day and hid under long tops. These are the first pair I put on in the morning and forget about until the evening.” – Sarah Mitchell
